Advice:
Questions & Answers
Q. What's the difference between your metal detectors?
A. Generally, the more you pay
for a metal detector the deeper it goes, the better it identifies
the good finds from the junk ones (discrimination) and the more sites it
will work on effectively.
Q. Are your metal detectors easy to use?
A. All Fieldmaster metal detectors have
the minimum of controls to keep the operation as simple as possible. They’re
well balanced, lightweight and comfortable, with a cushioned hand grip and
arm rest. They’re also very compact, breaking down to just 21"
(54cm) long
when not in use. Not many other makes will do that!
Q. What will they find?
A. Millions of articles have been
lost or buried during our history, and lie waiting to be discovered with
metal detectors. Fieldmaster metal detectors will find gold, silver, coins, rings,
jewellery, badges, necklaces, watches, medals, hidden hoards, artefacts -
all sorts of valuable and interesting objects. They will work anywhere
inland or on the beach and will detect through earth, grass, mud, sand,
water, ice, concrete, rock, brick, wood, and so on.
Q. Where can I find things?
A. You’ll find things anywhere - in your garden, on wasteland or open ground, along paths and lanes, over commons, woods,
parks, fields and farmland, down by river banks and on beaches.
Q. How deep do they go?
A. The larger an object is the deeper it will be detected in the
ground. But other factors affect the depth - how long an object has been
buried, the shape and position of the object, the metals it’s made of
and the ground conditions. In general, coins can be found up to about 12
inches (30cm) deep. A fairly big object such as a chest can be detected to
about 3 feet (1 metre) in the ground. A few coins together in something
like a pot can be detected up to 2 feet or more (60cm). The £500,000
Kelso hoard, for example, was found with a Fieldmaster. The first few
coins lying together were found at a depth of 18 inches. Yet in a quick
test, in the air, each coin may only be detected at about 6-8 inches.
Q. Can they tell
what's being detected?
A. When out searching a lot of junk can be found. Discrimination
allows you to distinguish between valuable items such as coins and rings,
and worthless items such as nails and silver paper. The discriminate
(reject) controls on Fieldmaster metal detectors can be set so that most buried junk is
ignored as the search head passes over it. The result is more of your
finds will be valuable and less will be rubbish!
Q. What is a silent search motion
metal detector?
A. Motion type detectors only detect metal when the search head is
moving. Because of this they automatically adjust for varying ground conditions giving
better depth and clearer discrimination. They work easily and effectively
over all sites, including soils with a high concentration of iron oxide (mineralization).
They’re also called ‘silent search’ because they’re normally silent in
operation and a sound is only heard when metal is found.
Q. How many batteries do they use?
A. All models use the latest technology to give low battery drain. Only one
standard high power PP3 type battery is required. All models have a
built-in electronic battery regulator, so there is no drop in performance
as the battery runs down. The depth remains the same until the battery is
exhausted. Rechargeables can be used as well - the regulator
takes care of the lower voltage.
Q. Can I use my detector on the beach?
A. Yes. Fieldmaster search heads are fully waterproof so searching can be
done in shallow water. You can
search river banks and beaches without any problem. All Fieldmaster metal
detectors will work on wet and dry sand on the beach.
