Finds: What's been found with a Fieldmaster?

When you buy a good metal detector you expect to find things with it. You will with a deep seeking Fieldmaster! This page illustrates just some of the finds that Fieldmaster metal detector owners have discovered over the years.

Largest hoard of the period ever found in Scotland - worth £500,000!

The average treasure hunter may find a valuable coin or perhaps a piece of jewellery during a day's searching, but it is also possible to find a very valuable hoard. Willie Swanston, a retired engineer, found a hoard of ancient coins, valued at more than £500,000! with a Fieldmaster metal detector. He discovered the hoard in a field near his home in Kelso, Scotland.

To date over 1,300 gold and silver coins, some nearly 450 years old and dating from 1546 to 1638, have been unearthed. Dr D. Clark, of the National Museums of Scotland, said, "It’s the largest hoard of this period ever found in Scotland". "It was a dream come true," said Willie. "The sort of thing you hear of other people doing, but never think it’ll happen to you. I found one coin, then the Fieldmaster just went mad. Every time I did a sweep it was detecting more coins. Then I came across a broken clay pot about 18" below ground. It was crammed with over 1,300 gold and silver coins. It was incredible".

The first piece of Bronze Age gold work ever to be found on the Isle of Wight.

"I dug down about 6 inches and spotted a gold object in the spoil. With a shaking hand I bent down and retrieved it. Is it really gold?, I wondered. There was no signs of tarnish, or base metal showing through plating, the find exhibited just a nice, even yellow-colour. At another part of the field at a depth of about 4 inches I uncovered a thimble which was coated in a brown crust but otherwise in very good condition".

David Monkin, Assistant County Archaeologist on the Isle of Wight said, "The thimble is mid-17th century and very rare. The piece of gold is late Bronze Age and a piece of ring money. It is the first piece of Bronze Age gold work ever to be found on the Isle of Wight, and that I had made history". It gave me a real buzz to think that I was the first person to touch that piece of gold since it had been lost perhaps 3,000 years ago".

58 Gold Coins found in Berkshire!

"Wow a golden button!" After spending a while examining our "treasure" we checked 3-4 feet around the hole, just in case there were anymore "golden buttons". It was just beginning to get dark when the detector sounded off time and time again. If I had had a torch with me I think I would have stayed all night, but as it was now dark I reluctantly returned home. In total that evening we found 17 gold coins, spread over a large area.

Over the following week the total went up to 58. The feeling that I was the first person to touch these coins in 2,000 years overwhelmed me".

Henry VIII found at 14 inches!

"I thought I would try out my Fieldmaster metal detector on sites well searched. As this would give a good indication of the metal detector's power. The first day out produced a farthing of Queen Victoria. Encouraged by this. I tried another well searched site. Digging down about eight inches I found a hammered silver groat of Henry VIII.

A yard further on I got a sound. Because of the groat I decided to dig this signal. At nearly fourteen inches down I found another groat! Unbelievable!! I stared at Henry VIII in amazement. No detector could find such a small single coin at this depth! There were seven groats at the bottom of this hole. A further search of the surrounding area turns up two more, lying apart at the same depth as the first, making ten in all".
